Use Case Description
Activity – An aggregation of information about resources and where they are held is used to enable sharing of resources between institutions. Document Delivery is a clear example where an institution does not have the resource but can use the aggregation to look up, and request, a document from another institution
Actors – Data owner; End users; Aggregation service
Data involved – Descriptions of resources; details of holdings at institutions; details of how they can be accessed by other institutions or non-members (e.g. document delivery; walk-in access)
Workflows – Multiple data owners contribute records to the aggregation, including details of holdings and how they can be accessed by other institutions or non-members.
Using the aggregation, an institution or end user can look up availability of a resource within the aggregation and request access
Current Examples – OCLC ILLiad
Benefits – What is the business case?
Data owner – Effective use of resources locally and access to a wide range of materials on demand
End Users – Access to wider range of material than can be supplied by any single institution; faster turn around on requests for resources not held locally
Aggregators – Opportunity to monetize resource sharing service (e.g. via subscription, charge per transaction)
